Dear Ask an OT,
I am a new caregiver for my older sister. I know falls are a leading cause of injury for older adults. What are some things I can do to help prevent falls?
- Routine eye exams and if she has glasses, be sure she is wearing them
- Routine hearing exams and if she has hearing aides, be sure she is wearing them
- Stay active - do strength, endurance, and balance exercises
- Use a walker/assistive devices if recommended by a professional
- * Assume proper use of the assistive device
- Get up slowly after sitting or lying down
- Reduce fall hazards around the home:
- Remove clutter from halls and stairs
- Suggest furniture arrangement that provides plenty of room to move around freely
- Remove throw rugs that are not securely held down
- Keep floors dry and in good repair
- Have medications reviewed by doctor at each visit (some medications may cause dizziness)
